Tuesday, August 22, 2017, Mackinaw City, MI
Day 103

We checked out of this KOA which has to be the quietest campground we have ever stayed at and departed Munising. We were parked in the back of the campground in the forest which was not only quiet but the shade kept it dark allowing a couple great nights sleep. We headed to Mackinaw City, MI, but decided to take about a 50 minute detour and drive the Tahquamenon Scenic Byway and visit the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Just in case we did not get our fill of waterfalls yesterday we wanted to see the Tahquamenon Falls. First up was the Tahquamenon Upper Falls, second in size east of the Mississippi only to Niagara. Well the Upper Falls did not disappoint. 200 feet wide and 50 feet high, the water flow is 52,000 gallons a second. The water is a beautiful tea color from the tannins in the river. Four miles up the river, we stopped at the Lower Falls thinking this can’t be much compared to the Upper Falls. Wrong! The Lower Falls were equally impressive. So many splits in the river meant you can’t take a photo of it all at once. We continued onto Mackinaw City and checked into Mill Creek Campground after crossing the Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest suspension spans in the world. A windy day, we were required to stay in the right lane and not exceed 20 mph due to the heavy crosswind. With 5 miles at 20 mph it sure seemed like a very long bridge. Total drive time was 3 hours. After dinner, we walked along the shore of Lake Huron. The wind was really blowing and it was freezing. We had noticed on the drive that the trees are beginning to show their fall colors already.
