Day 27

An early start and a trip to the Citadel for the first of the season changing of the guard at 10 am. I have been to the changing of the guard at Windsor Castle in London which lasts a few minutes.  This was quite a production lasting almost 45 minutes and included a soldier marching band, a soldier bugler and a goat (the mascot of the 22nd Regiment). After the changing of the guard, a tour of the Citadel including buildings dating to the late 1600's.  Lunch at Paillard Patisserie with sandwiches followed by more pastries, a Jesuite (flaky layers of dough filled frangipane creme and topped with almonds) and a chocolate banana croissant, and then back to the Citadel for a tour of the Governor General’s second residence (the first being Rideau Hall in Ottawa which we visited earlier in the trip). More city walking and a stop at a cafĂ© before returning to the coach for dinner.

Day 26

First stop the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency (Montmorency Falls Park).  A spectacular waterfall that at 270 feet is 98 feet taller than Niagara.  A suspension bridge spans the waterfall and a staircase down the steep cliff took us to the bottom of the falls.  Toward the bottom, the staircase splits into two paths, a dry one and one which was not too dry.   We parted with Aaron at that point and re-joined him at the bottom.  Aaron, needless to say, was not too dry. We opted not to take the gondola back up but ascended the stairway. I did not count the steps but it must have been in the thousands, or at least it felt like it.  Lunch at Croquembouche Patisserie and then a visit to and tour of the National Assembly (the Provincial Parliament).  The Provincial government has no executive and only one legislative chamber, the House of Lords (the upper chamber) having been dissolved.  We walked all over the Old City visiting sites along the way including another Notre Dame Basilica.  Dinner at La Buche, featuring Quebecoise cuisine.  A starter of soupe aux pois (pea soup), a Quebec must, was delicious, reminiscent of a bisque style meaning lots of heavy cream.  Aaron and I shared the meat tourtiere which consisted of pork, beef and venison in pastry crust and the pate chinois (wine braised beef) topped with house made maplewood smoked bacon.  Outrageous and worth the years probably taken off my life. Best bacon I have ever had. Maybe an extra statin would be a good idea. Rosemary had a lobster salad with fennel, blueberries and loads of other things and which came with 3 claws.  Happiness galore!

Day 25

Slept late after the previous late night.  Travel day to Quebec City, the Capital of the Quebec Province.  Travel along the Canadian equivalent of an interstate, the expressway was quite rough in areas.  So much shaking going on that just as we were about to go over the bridge crossing the St. Lawrence river our front windshield shade came crashing down on the driver’s side.  Fortunately, it only partially blocked my view if I sat tall in the chair and slightly to the left.  To see to the passengers side I just shifted a little right and hunched down. What fun! With nowhere to stop we continued on another about 15 minutes and checked into the Ville de Quebec campground.  With Aaron’s help, we were able to effect repairs.  Visited Old Quebec Basse-Ville (Lower Town) and ate dinner at Le Lapin Saute (the jumping rabbit). I had the rabbit in two sauces, one a berry red wine sauce and the other a two mustards sauce, both very good.  Rosemary also had the rabbit with only the berry red wine sauce.  Aaron had the rabbit tourtiere, basically rabbit in puff pastry.  All very good and no wings!  After dinner we walked around the lower town and then up the Breakneck Stairs to the upper town and a visit to the Fairmont  Le Chateau Frontenac, walk along the Dufferin Terrace with views overlooking the lower town and the St. Lawrence River.

Day 24

Metro back to the Montreal Space For Life to visit the Montreal Biodome, an exhibit of 5 ecosystems including a hot and humid tropical exhibit which reminded us why we leave Florida in the summer.  Other exhibits included the Laurentian maple forest, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Labrador coast and the Sub-Arctic and Sub-Antarctic regions which included the puffins and also penguins.  Afternoon was at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium for two shows.  Then we headed to Old Montreal for a traditional Basque dinner at Les Pyrenees.  The pork tenderloin in madeira sauce was excellent as was Aaron’s Valencia mussels and Rosemary’s sea bass in roasted red pepper sauce.  Dessert was Gateau Roule Catalan l’Orange nappe de Chocolat Tiede (rolled Catalan orange cake topped with warm chocolate sauce). Plate licking outstanding but Rosemary would not let me lick the plate. We topped off a marvelous day with the Montreal based Cirque du Soleil show “Luzia”.

Day 23

Metro to the Montreal Space For Life which is located in the facilities built for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games.  First of the four complexes was the Montreal Botanical Gardens.  We have been to many botanical gardens with greenhouses but in my view this was the best I have experienced.  Ten greenhouses and 30 thematic gardens took up most of the day.  Also within the gardens was the Insectarium, an interesting exhibit of live and mounted specimens.  On the way to dinner was our daily stop at the patisserie to pick up dessert and then at Frite Alors! where we partake in La Montrealaise (smoked meat) poutine and La Canard (duck) poutine.  Both delicious mounds of meat and gravy served over frites (french fries).  Back to the coach to devour our pastries and happily stuffed again.

Day 22

Twenty minute drive to the Metro (subway) parking lot and bought 3 day passes for all subways and buses in Montreal.  Metro and bus to Parc du Mont-Royal for a beautiful view overlooking the city of Montreal. Lunch at Schwartz’s, a very popular Jewish Deli for Montreal’s famous smoked meat (similar to pastrami but much better). Picked up more pastries at Fous Desserts, then a visit to the Ile de Ste. Helene, the location of the 1967 World’s Fair, Expo ‘67. Dinner in the coach of homemade spaghetti followed by pastries and the happiness continues unabated.

Day 21

Picked up Aaron at the airport in the morning who will join us for a week. Visited Old Montreal and the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montreal. Lunch in Chinatown at Nouilles de Lan Zhou, a noodle bar, then bubble tea at Chatime and Rosemary was happy.  A visit to Chateau Ramezay, built 1714-1716, filled us in on the history of Quebec. A stop at Fairmont Bagel for a dozen and then Kouign Amann Patisserie for an almond croissant and a kouign amann pastry (basically a lot of delicious butter and sugar and pastry). Bagels and lox for dinner in the coach followed by pastries and we were all very happy.

Day 20

Drove the car into Montreal and found a private pay parking lot close to our destination.  Walked to Temple Emanu-El Beth Sholom, Canada’s oldest reform synagogue dating from 1882.  With 1800 family members the place is huge compared to our Tampa congregation of about 200. Next was the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Rosemary was very happy. Next was a subway ride to the Jean-Talon Market for some Ranier cherries and poppy seed strudel. Dinner at an Italian joint and Rosemary had chicken parm and was happy.

Day 19

Travel day from Ottawa to Montreal. When we entered Quebec, all the street signs suddenly appeared in French only unlike Ontario in which all signs were in English and French.  Got out our French/English dictionary and tried to make sense of the signage. Arrived at Camping Aloutte (a bit east on Montreal) about 3:00 and decided to stay in and avoid city rush hour. With our first full camping hookup since Pittsburgh, we did 2 loads of laundry and Rosemary was very happy.
