Day 100

The day started at 6:05 am. Got to the train station at 7:30 for our 8:00 Agawa Canyon Tour Train. The full day excursion is a ride of 114 miles through incredible landscapes and rugged scenery with a stop at Agawa Canyon Park, which can only be accessed by train or considerable hike. We had plenty of room and brought our coolers with lunch, snacks and drinks in lieu of the dining car. The scenery was fantastic and the tour did a great job with narration pointing out various sites. At the park, in the 90 minutes allocated before the train departed for the return trip, we hiked to the Bridal Veil Falls, the South and North Black Beaver Falls and to the Lookout, with 330 steps up to a great view of the canyon. Dinner in Sault St. Marie at Bali Indonesian Restaurant was only fair with small portions. A great day and a needed one after the lousy day yesterday.

Day 99

Unhooked and on way to the campground dump station the hot exhaust light came on and a few seconds later the check engine light and a few seconds later the stop engine light. I stopped at the dump station and dumped. I started coach and all 3 lights were still on so I pulled away from the dump station and called the Freightliner hotline. We went through the onboard diagnostics which revealed 2 error codes, neither of which made sense since I had driven only a few hundred feet. The most likely suspect was a bad sensor which was reading hot exhaust when it was not. Then the bad news, we needed a Cummins Insight computer to reset the coach before it could be driven and the nearest one was 2.5 hours away according to Freightliner’s list of service techs. I inquired of our campground host and was given the number of Superior Truck in Wawa, the town of 3,000 in which we were in. I called Superior and was in luck, they had Cummins Insight. We waited about 1.5 hours for Superior to arrive at the campground and we got reset and were told it was a bad sensor and he may have the part. If not, we should be good to go to Superior’s affiliated shop in Sault St. Marie (“SSM”) which would have the part. SSM was our destination that day as we had campground reservations and reservations on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train the next day. We went to Superior’s shop in Wawa and got there about noon. We then waited for the SSM shop to find the correct part number we needed to see if Wawa had it. About 1:15 we finally got the news that Wawa did not have the part. But Superior suggested they check for a possible loose wire and that would be 15-20 minutes. 45 minutes later at 2:00 I told them to stop as I needed to get to SSM before they close at 5:00. After being gouged, we finally hit the road at 2:25 for the 2.5 hour drive to SSM. I had asked Superior to write the part number and info I needed to get to SSM. Once on the road I noticed I had a part number but no name, phone number or address of the shop in SSM. As we approached SSM and the hour was approaching 5:00, I decided to check into our campground, Holiday KOA (30ampW), and try to get to the States before any repairs. I was not too confident in the Superior service and the coach seemed to be working fine. We drove into SSM to check out where the train station was as we had to be there at 7:30 am tomorrow. The station is next to a mall so Rosemary got her teas at Tevana and David’s Tea. Oh, did I mention it rained most of the day.
