Sunday, August 13, 2017, Kenora, ON
Day 94

We departed Winnipeg and drove 45 minutes north to Lockport to view the St. Andrews Lock and Dam on the Red River which is purportedly the only “Camere” styled lock and dam in North America. The dam is made up of wooden curtains which move to block or allow the flow of water. We did not see it in operation so it did not appear impressive to us. But 4 minutes further north was the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, the oldest stone fur trading post in North America. The stone buildings still exist and costumed staff appear as it did in 1851. The fort was the Hudson’s Bay Company trading post which owned a large portion of the northwest. Canada purchased the land from them and established the Manitoba Province. We then continued east along Highway 44 which was a good road until the we hit the Whiteshell Provincial Park which is the beginning of the Canadian Shield and the landscape changed dramatically.  For approximately the last 30 miles of Manitoba, it was a narrow, no shoulder, bouncy, rough road. We entered Ontario and stopped at the Walmart in Kenora, ON, about 7 pm. We ate dinner and then about 8:30 we were going to pick up some items in Walmart to find out it closed at 8 pm. Oh well, that made for a quiet night.
