Friday, August 4, 2017, Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Unit, ND
Day 85

After a 70 mile drive north and entering central time once again, we arrived at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Unit and picked out a pull through site at the Juniper Campground in the park. No facilities but a good flat paved site. We got in the car and drove the 14 mile route through the park. Spectacular scenery and lots more bison. We did several hikes. On one hike among some trees and brush we looked to the side and saw a lone buffalo no more than 100 feet away so we quietly proceeded to retreat without it recognizing that we were there. On another hike, we came across a rattlesnake. He definitely gave us a warning and we kept our distance but still managed to get a photo of it. At another spot we climbed among the concretions, large round formations. We spotted a grouse with a brood of 8 to 10 crossing the road (by foot) after momma grouse gave the all clear signal.  Dinner in the coach (the only option - no restaurants anywhere near). After dinner, we exited the coach to attend the 8:00 ranger program. To our amazement, our path was blocked by a herd of bison not more than about 100 feet from our coach. As other campers gathered, we all took an alternate path but the bison seem to be going our way as well. The program ended up moving to a different building while the bison kept moving on by. The program told stories about Teddy Roosevelt and his time in the badlands.
