Day 93

We began the day with a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint. This is one of 2 Canadian Mints, but the one in Ottawa makes collector coins only. It was not in operation as it was down for repairs. When operating, it produces 15 million coins a day. Only 20% of which are Canadian coins. The rest is minted for other countries. Although no free samples, we did get to lift a gold bar worth about $750,000. Unfortunately, it was secured to ground. Lunch at Bernstein’s Deli was cabbage borscht, potato and onion perogies and a ruben with house made corned beef--delicious! We also bought a poppy seed pastry and pistachio halvah to take home. The afternoon was spent at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. It has a fairly new exhibit called the Journey to Churchill featuring a marvelous polar bear exhibit where you walk through a clear tunnel while the bears are swimming overhead. So we got to go to Churchill after all. The zoo also had an animatronic dinosaur exhibit which the grandkids would have loved.
