Day 56

Well, we made it without running out of water. Actually had plenty to spare. Before departing Chicago, we had a 9:30 tour of Wrigley Field. We arrived about 9:00 and there was people lined up everywhere for the game which did not start until 1:20. Our guide said the crowd usually does not begin that early except today’s game was a bobble head giveaway to the first 10,000. Amazing! Doesn’t anyone work anymore? Good tour guide explaining the history of the 1914 ballpark and the Cubs, the second oldest in the nation. After the tour, we had lunch at nearby Southport Grocery and CafĂ©. The bread pudding pancakes were worth the stop. We departed McCormick Place and headed north with a stop in Pleasant Prairie, WS, at the Jelly Belly Center. Turned out the factory is near Chicago and this is just a warehouse with a small indoor train tour of exhibits/films explaining the manufacturing process. We did get some samples. The process shows that they use mostly natural ingredients for flavor in the center of the jelly bellies. Yet, one of their flavors is “vomit”. The employee at the sample station said some people actually eat the vomit flavor. I would hate to be the employee who had to perfect that flavor. We also discovered that irregular Jelly Bellies are sold in Wisconsin as “belly flops”. We arrived at the Wisconsin State Fair RV Park and set up. After leftover pizza which was still delicious (our first ever use of the convection part of our microwave), we headed to Kopp’s Custard. A big parking lot but you had to catch someone leaving to get a space. The line was out the door but moved quickly. Delicious. No wonder as we are in the custard capital of the country.
