Day 58

We began the day at the free Miller Brewery Tour. The tour included a visit to the Historic Caves nestled deep in Miller Valley where the beer was kept cold with ice back when the brewery was just beginning. 10,000,000 barrels a year makes it the second largest brewery. Samples included Lite and some Leinenkugel beers. One neat item was the High Life Cruiser, a 1953 Flxible which contained some history of the company including a series of old beer cans for which, being a collector of beer cans, I was envious. Next stop was the Pabst Mansion, a Flemish Renaissance Revival mansion, built 1890-1892 by Captain Frederick Pabst. Captain Pabst actually married into the brewery business. His father-in-law was the founder of Best Brewery and when he passed, the Captain ultimately acquired the company and with the family’s approval, changed the name to Pabst. Pabst beer won the “blue ribbon” as the best beer at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The Pabst Pavilion at the World’s Fair was disassembled and re-assembled as an addition to the mansion. After our guided tour, we walked around the former Pabst Brewery area and the “Old World 3rd Street” area where we stopped at the Wisconsin Cheese Mart for samples and a couple purchases.  Dinner is at Fujiyama in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee where the RV park is actually located. After dinner, one last visit to Kopp’s for delicious custard.
