Day 53

In the morning we drove to the Museum of Science and Industry to view the building. This is the only building that remains from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and it is quite outstanding. So large we could not get a photo of it in its entirety. We then walked around Jackson Park and saw “the Republic” statue, a 37 foot tall replica which is one third the height of the original which greeted visitors to the 1893 World’s Fair. We walked the Japanese Garden dodging sprinklers on in the garden. Next we headed to the airport to pick up Aaron who will be with us until Sunday. The afternoon was spent at Millennium Park in downtown. The park is home to the Crown Fountain and Cloud Gate aka the Bean. The fountain is interesting with its changing faces but the Bean is really a fantastic work of art. It is pretty neat to walk all around it and look for your reflection which is distorted depending on where you are standing. You can also walk completely underneath it which results in multiple reflections. After the park, we walked around downtown viewing the architecturally significant buildings including the Rookery with its interior redesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright. We also visited the Federal Reserve Bank Money Museum and walked off with bags of cash, unfortunately shredded cash (going to need lots of glue and patience). Dinner at famous Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria for Chicago deep dish pizza. We ordered 2 small pizzas, the “Classic” and the “Lou” and despite its deliciousness we had leftovers.
