Day 50

We began the day with a guided tour of Ruthmere, the Beaux Arts mansion built in 1910 of A.R. Beardsley, the nephew of Havilah Beardsley. A.R. was also a physician and was one of the founders of Miles Laboratories. Next we walked the Island Garden and stopped downtown to view the Seward Johnson statue he made of the Grant Wood’s American Gothic.  After lunch we visited the RV/MH Hall of Fame Museum. The history of recreational vehicles is told with examples dating to 1913. I especially enjoyed the 1974 Winnebago as it brought back some good memories. My folks first motorhome was a 1973 Winnebago in which the 3 of us traveled around the country for 2 months in the summer of 1977 and which I lived in for a year while in law school. After the museum, we visited Nexus RV which is based in Elkhart and viewed a couple of their coaches. Nexus is a 7 year old manufacturer that sells wholesale direct to the consumer.
