Day 13, May 10, 2018.  Thursday.
A morning tour of Melk Abbey, a 900 year old monastery and its gardens followed by a walk down the main avenue of Melk, Austria, a cute little town.  Back on the ship in the afternoon for an apple strudel demonstration which of course, included a large sample.  The apple desserts are far more outstanding than anything comparable in the U.S.  Next was a tour of the ship’s galley by the head Chef, Thomas, who hails from Budapest.  It is amazing that so much good food comes out of a fairly small kitchen.  Organization makes it happen says Chef.  A late afternoon excursion to Sandgrube 13, a wine cooperative in Krems, Austria, located in the Wachau Valley.  A tour of the co-op and samples of the wines including the Gruner Vetliner, a white wine unique to Austria.  Dinner on the ship featured a “Taste of Austria”, a incredible feast of Gruner Vetliner wine, sauerbraten, red cabbage, potato salad, coleslaw, bratwurst and other sausages.  Each dinner on board we seem to end with 3 different desserts and this day was no exception so I rename the ship the “buffet boat” as the pounds are packing onto my waistline.  Walking time 2:29, 12,676 steps.
