Day 10, May 7, 2018.  Monday.
A morning tour of Nuremberg began with a stop at the grounds where Nazi rallies were staged. Included was a drive inside the “coliseum”, an intent by Hitler to build a facility modeled on the Roman Coliseum except much bigger.  Construction began in 1935 but stopped in 1940 before completion due to other pressing needs i.e., the war effort.  In the “old city”, we visited the Imperial Palace surrounded by 13th century walls with many gates and watchtowers.  We walked down castle hill and visited Market Square with its Gothic fountain.  On the square we visited a church which was built on the foundation of a prior synagogue.  Behind the church altar remained the Star of David.  A quick bite at Bratwursthausle included 6 nurembergers, a Bavarian skinny bratwurst, with sauerkraut and a Tucher bock bier.  In the afternoon we toured the beer cellars under the Palace where German artwork was stored beginning in 1939.  The artwork was protected unbeknownst to Hitler or his henchmen since this indicated preparation in case the war did not go well.  Since Nuremberg was carpet bombed and 90% of it was destroyed, the preparation was successful and the art saved.  Some of the hidden art belonging in the St. Sebald Gothic Church was returned there and was present during our visit to the church.  Walking time 2:46, 12,459 steps.
