Day 29, Thursday, August, 23, 2018. Rimouski, QC
In the morning we visited the Pointe-au-Pere Historic Maritime Site which had a rare octagonal lighthouse and the Museum of the Empress of Ireland. We had visited a traveling exhibit of the Empress of Ireland while in Nova Scotia and wanted to see the permanent exhibit.  Many artifacts were recovered from the 1914 ship sinking which cost 1,012 lives in Canada’s largest maritime disaster.  The sinking was caused by a collision with another ship in the fog of the St. Lawrence River just before 2:00 am.  The ship went down in only 14 minutes trapping many. The site of the sinking is just off the shore at the museum’s site. Both ship’s captains survived and gave differing accounts and no resolution was ever reached as to who was at fault. In the afternoon, we drove about 25 minutes inland to Le Canyon des Portel de l’Enfer. We hiked to the Grand Chute (waterfall) and hiked some of the Draveur trail to get to the suspension bridge over the Rimouski River at a height of 63 meters. Rosemary chose not to cross the bridge while I checked the scenic overlook on the far side. We continued on the trail and down 300 steps to the river’s edge. A beautiful and serene spot despite having to go up 300 steps to leave.
