July 16, 2015, Thursday, Sioux Falls, SD
Day 77

Visited the one and only site to see in Mitchell, SD, the World’s Only Corn Palace. Every year since the 1880's, the Corn Palace is decorated with corn and other flora.  The process begins in June and is completed in November. 12 different colors of corn are used to make the designs. It was very interesting but I think it is a questionable use of resources.  The palace owns a 100 acre farm to grow the corn which never gets eaten. It does provide some seasonal employment and some tourist dollars (but not ours as we avoided the gift shop).  Drove 70 miles to Sioux Falls and parked at Walmart.  Went to the Falls Park on the Big Sioux River and saw the falls that gave the city its name.  Very nice park and walked along both sides of the river.   Supper at the Phnom Penh Restaurant (Cambodian cuisine). For an appetizer, we had the num ansom chrouk (sticky rice filled with marinated pork and mung beans and steamed in a banana leaf) served with a slightly sweet and salty dipping sauce. Fantastic! Main courses were the Khmer styled chicken curry and mei gala noodle salad (not really a salad) both delicious and better yet, large portions for take home. Service was friendly and good. If this place was in Tampa, I would be a regular for sure.
