July 12, 2015, Sunday, Hill City, SD
Day 73

Morning was spent at Mount Rushmore National Monument.  Other than the mountain, the place has been totally redone since my only other visit in 1977.  In 1990, a new visitors center, sculptor’s studio, museum, trex walkway, amphitheater and two multistory parking garages were built. Lunch at Powder House Restaurant in Keystone, SD where I had an elk burger (better and leaner than beef). Wine tasting and gelato at Grapes and Grind. Then a visit to the Custer State Park and a beautiful drive through the Black Hills and on Wildlife Loop we passed two herds of wild bison. On the drive back to our campground, we took Needles Highway, a 14 mile stretch which goes through 3 one lane tunnels each one smaller than the one before.  How about 8'4" wide and 10'7" high. No problem for the Honda but we witnessed a full size pickup which had to turn its mirrors in to make it.  Needless to say we saw no motorhomes on this road. Many interesting rock formations along the way to stop and climb. Supper in Hill City at Bumpin’ Buffalo Bar and Grill where I had a buffalo sirloin paired with a Buffalo Sweat porter, quite good. Rosemary had wild caught Alaska salmon, not as good. Another great day as I hung one more year on the line.
