July 14, 2015, Tuesday, Rapid City, SD
Day 75

Departed Hill City and visited Wind Cave National Park. Went on the Fairgrounds tour which took almost 2 hours.   This cave was a constant 54 degrees and has, so far, a unique formation called boxwork through most of the area we toured. Beautiful and fascinating and I rate the cave a must see. In the afternoon we visited the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD. An ancient water filled sinkhole with slippery shale sides enticed animals in for a drink but once in they could not escape.  This is an active archeological site and to date 61 Mammoth tusk pairs and skeletons have been found and there is much left to excavate. A few other extinct animals have also been found including a giant short faced bear. A building was built over the site to help preserve it. I also rate this a must see. Late afternoon drive to Rapid City Walmart for a much needed grocery run and an overnight. And finally, a haircut after 2-1/2 months! Across the street was the Pacific Rim CafĂ© so I could not refuse Rosemary her Asian supper.
