Day 39

Day 2 of The Henry Ford. We begin with a tour of the Ford Rouge Plant where they make the Ford F-150 trucks. A first film about the facilities history and a second film- a virtual reality 4D experience (very cool). Next an indoor observation deck with a view of Detroit, Windsor and the plant including the green roof planted with sedum which keeps the factory cooler in summer, warmer in winter and reduces rain runoff. Then a plant tour. The assembly line to manufacture these vehicles never ceases to amaze.  After the tour, we do the incredible Henry Ford Museum which celebrates American innovative genius. We partake of the insiders tour. Among the collection some unique items: the blood stained chair in which Lincoln was shot, the car in which Kennedy was shot (which was completely renovated and continued in service for 4 more years) and the bus that Rosa Parks rode when she refused to give up her seat. Lastly, we get a well needed chance to sit down with a 45 minute film “Dream Big” about the great things engineers do to improve all of our lives. As we depart, we stopped at the Henry Ford Estate, “Fair Lane”. The house is closed for renovations but the grounds are open. I rate The Henry Ford a must see. Plan on two full days.
