Day 36

We departed Leisure Lake Resort where our “pull through” spot turned out to be “pull in”, that means I had to back out due to trees and insufficient space. Campers stay away from this campground! We visited the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary which was billed as lots of birds.  Turns out only lots of geese and 2 turkeys. Did learn of the good conservation work done by Jack Miner and the museum had some Ty Cobb memorabilia, a good friend of Miner’s.  Drove through Kingsville and headed to Windsor, ON.  As we approached Windsor, I marveled at the impressive skyline. As we arrived, it became apparent that the skyline was of Detroit just across the river. We stopped at Hiram Walker & Co. for a tour and tasting of the Canadian Club distillery. Turned out that they discontinued the tours and tastings March 31. Bummer! After 20 minutes it was also apparent that not much doing in Windsor so we headed on into Michigan and checked into the Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park, about halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor.

Day 35

After a morning constitutional around the White Oaks Mall to which our Walmart was an anchor, and some grocery shopping at Walmart, we departed London and arrived at Leisure Lake Resort in Ruthven, ON, after a 2 hour drive. After setup and lunch, we headed to Point Pelee National Park where we finally got to use our Canadian National Park Pass which we obtained prior to our trip. Canada is celebrating its 150th year by offering the park pass free to all its national parks. Point Pelee is the southern most point of Canada’s mainland. The park has many hiking trails of which we did a few. We saw birds galore as well as rabbits, squirrels, turtles and a raccoon. The raccoon was in the road eating some roadkill and was not the least disturbed as we drove by him.

Day 34

A day of hanging out reading tourist brochures we discovered Cirque du Soleil had a show in London beginning June 14. An attempt to get ticket info online was unsuccessful so we drove to the Budweiser Gardens arena where the show was to play. Luckily, we got tickets to the evening show. We drove around London a bit and went back to the coach to relax. We made a reservation at La Casa, a family run Italian restaurant across the street from the Budweiser Gardens arena. When I left my phone number, I answered “Tampa” to the inquiry as to where my area code was from. When we were seated at the restaurant, our waiter, David, began our conversation with the Tampa Bay Bucs and Lightning. David, a lifelong Montreal Canadians fan, told us about a hockey experience he had that when he lived in Toronto. For the price he and his wife paid to see a game in Toronto (when the Canadians were playing), they could have flown to Tampa, stayed in a hotel, gone to see a game between the Lightning and Canadians and would have spent less than what it cost to see the game in Toronto. Anyway, back to the dinner which was stupendous. I had a special that was on the original menu when La Casa opened in 1994, sirloin tips with penne pasta, capers, sun dried tomatoes and kalamata olives in a red sauce highlighted with tangerine oil. One of the all time great meals I have had which began with a bowl of minestrone that was also the best I have had. Rosemary had salmon that was also outstanding. In my lifetime, there have only been two restaurants that I had returned to the next day because they were so good. This would have been a third but for the sad fact we would be departing London the next day. The show “Ovo” was also great. The acrobats and contortionists are beyond belief. There was even a trapeze performance without swings - the men were acting as the swings upside down from a fixed position tossing the girls all around. I almost forgot to mention, we parked at the arena within about 200 feet of the doors prior to walking to La Casa and seeing the show. When I expressed surprise at the fee of only $6.00, the attendant informed me “this is not Toronto”.
