Day 44

A sunny day and just in time for our car trip to the Digby Neck, Long Island and Brier Island.  The neck and islands are about a total of about 50 miles.  The two islands at the end of the neck can only be reached by ferry. We headed for the furthest island, Brier, and then worked our way back. We reached the first ferry a couple minutes before it departed.  We were the last to drive onto the ferry and at about the same time I shifted into park and turned the key off we were under way. It was a weird feeling sitting in your parked car while the wharf was moving past. On Brier Island, we visited the 3 lighthouses and walked along a secluded beach.  Not a lot of people around.  The town of Westport is on the island and has a population of 246. We ate lunch at the Lighthouse Café, the only game in town after an attempt to eat at the Brier Island Lodge Restaurant which was not open for lunch. The meal of fish and chips and Digby scallops (Digby claims to be the scallop capital of the world) and chips was great. Huge piece of haddock and sweet scallops was one of our better meals. A ferry back to Long Island and a hike over a mountain along the Fundy View Trail provided some beautiful views. We also did the trail to Balancing Rock, a basalt sea stack resting precariously on its end.
