Day 57

Visited the Bell Island #2 Mine.  Access to the island is by a 20 minute ferry ride out of Portugal Cove. The island population is about 3,000 and measures 10 km by 5 km. The island boundaries consists of steep cliffs all the way around.  Upon arrival we had lunch at Dick’s Fish and Chips where we had fish and chips. During the mines heyday, the population was up to 14,000. The mine is an iron ore mine and operated from 1885 to1966. The tour takes you down 650 feet below the surface to a cool 47 degrees. After the tour we visited the Bell Island lighthouse and then got in line for the ferry.  Turns out the ferry only holds 33-36 cars.  We were about number 50 which meant we had to wait for the 70 minutes round trip for the next ferry. No choice but to relax and enjoy the view while the line behind us kept growing. Once back on the mainland, after walking George Street and others, we had bento box dinners downtown at Sushi Island. Our last day in a city of any size for the rest of Newfoundland so Rosemary had to get her Asian fix.
