Day 51, May 22, 2019, Wednesday. Port Angeles, WA
Today we drove to the end of the earth or at least it felt that way. A 2 hour car ride on a mostly curvy road along the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Makah Tribe Reservation and a short trail to Cape Flattery, the northwestern most point of the continental U.S. Sorry but I am not a gifted enough writer to fully describe the incredible beauty of the pristine site including Tatoosh Island and “Hole in the Wall” coastline. We probably stayed in the spot for an hour just awestruck. I hope the photos can provide a glimpse but I doubt it. Hard to believe we can match the awe and excitement of this spot for the rest of our trip. But wait, there’s more. After the 2 hour drive back, which took longer as we stopped to pick up some street advertised smoked salmon and also a stop at Joyce Blackberry CafĂ© & Pies to pick up tonight’s dessert (alas, out of blackberry so we settled for blackberry and blueberry pie), we headed to Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic NP. An 18 mile mountain road to the top of a ridge at an elevation of over 5,200 feet offered a spectacular view of snow capped mountains, including Mount Olympus which at 7,980 feet is the tallest in the Olympic Mountains. The ridge was full of deer grazing on the hillsides surrounding the area. We hiked parts of the Cirque Rim, Big Meadow and High Ridge trails. We could not hike the entire trails due to them being blocked by snow. Another beautiful awe inspiring spot. Two in one day although each completely different from the other. How to top off a day like this. Well, with blackberry blueberry pie of course!
