Day 34, Biddeford, ME (Ogunquit)

Leave coach at Portsmouth Walmart and use car to travel to New Castle on Great Island founded in the 1600's.  Stopped at the remnants of Fort Constitution.  The fort was originally the British Fort William and Mary but the patriots captured it from the British in 1774 with the powder and arms. The munitions were used 4 months later in the battle of Bunker Hill.  Then a walk around the Portsmouth downtown.  About 11 am we decide to head in the car to Ogunquit about 20 miles north and take the scenic route along the southern coast of Maine.  We stop at the Nubble Lighthouse just as the fog rolled in and could barely see it (see photo).  Fortunately, the fog had not come in yet when we arrived at Ogunquit.  We take the Marginal Way walk and are amazed that the trail is mostly hot except when exposed to the water which causes a cool breeze to come in off the water.  Beautiful area.  After about an hour of walking, we stop at The Lobster Shack for lunch.  Two specials of the day are twin lobsters for $20 and lobster roll with clam chowder for $16.  Food was outstanding (see photos).  I washed it down with local brew Shipyard Export Ale.  Walked around the town and then head to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art which had an exhibit of Andrew Wyeth including a few works by his father, N.C. Wyeth, and his son, Jamie Wyeth.  The museum had some gardens and as we were in the gardens taking pictures the fog rolled in.  See the “before” and “after” photos taken 5 minutes apart.  Back to pick up the coach in NH and head to Biddeford, ME, Walmart to spend the night.  Biddeford is just north of tomorrow’s destination, Kennebunkport.
